Pharmacy Department

HISTORY :

Pharmacy department was established at the inception of LUTH for full operation in the Hospital in the year 1962. It was a major and key service department in LUTH on inception. From 1962 -1990 It operated as a department with the following sections.

 1. OPD -Out Patient Pharmacy for all Patients attending OPD Clinics.

2. IPP -In Patient Pharmacy for all admitted Cases .

3. YOPD -Yaba-Out Patient Pharmacy Department for Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Dermatology and psychiatry Cases.

4. Pharmacy Store -For storage and distribution of all drugs.

5. Ebute -Meta Pharmacy -Services offered to LUTH patients' convalescing at the Ebute-meta extension.

6. Compounding Units- For Mixtures, Syrups, Lotions and Medicinal Ointment.

7. Accident and Emergency Section - For Emergency Cases.

However between 1990 and 2009, in an effort to expand and improve services, the drug production unit was carved out from the department. The department was divided into two major units then:

DRUG PRODUCTION

The Hospital services later carved out other subunits from the existing units leading to emergence of:

1. The Staff / ANC / NHIS Pharmacy -  For Staff, Antenatal and National Health Insurance patients.

 2. HIV (PEPFAR) Pharmacy - For Antiretroviral drugs for HIV Positive Cases

3. Olikoye Ransome-kuti Children Emergency Pharmacy (ORKCEP) - For Pediatrics patients

4. THEATRE Pharmacy - For Pre-Op and Anaesthetic drugs

5. DIC- Drug Information Centre

6. DRF- Drug Revolving Fund {Procurement}

Other intending units include:

i. DOT5                     - Directly Observed Therapy for T.B Patients
ii. GEC                      - For Ophthalmology Unit
iii. WARD E8             - For Diagnostic Centre and VIP Patients

The department also supplies drugs for use of patients at PAKOTO -primary health-care centre.

To be a leading modern Hospital pharmacy rendering qualitative, effective prompt patient -oriented pharmaceutical service, utilizing modern technology by engaging competent qualified committed and well motivated manpower, working in a conducive and patient friendly environment.

2. To provide responsible and effective clinical ward rounds, therapeutic drug monitoring, adverse drug reactions monitoring and patient counseling towards optimal patient satisfaction.

Services under the Directorate of Pharmaceutical Services in LUTH

Services Areas Main Duties

Administrative Services 
(1) Plan and Coordinate departmental activities.
(2) Develop policies, procedures and work protocol.
(3) Schedule personnel & provide supervision of duties.
(4) Management of Drug Revolving Fund Scheme.
(5) Register all drug suppliers.
(6) Supervise all staff.

Education and Training Services
(1) Coordinate educational program of students and internship
training.
(2) Participate in hospital educational programs.
(3) Train newly employed staff, retraining of old staff & organize seminars.

Accident & Emergency Services
 (1) Ensure adequate emergency services for adult and children.
(2) Provide prompt medication & pharmaceutical care to emergency patients.
(3) Monitor & control drugs supply to treatment areas.
(4) Maintain prescription records & transactions.
(5) Provide pharmacy consultancy services to healthcare professional, students & patients.

Out Patient Services
 (1) Provide medication & pharmaceutical care to out- patients.
 (2) Compound and dispense medications as required.
 (3) Monitor and control reagent supplied to clinics.
 (4) Maintain Prescription records & Transactions.
 (5) Provide pharmacy consultancy services to healthcare, Professionals, students and Patients.
(6) Counseling all patients and healthcare Professionals on Rational Drug Use.

In Patient Services
(1) Provide medication and Pharmaceutical care for admitted patients.
 (2) Inspect and control drug use and utilization in all treatment areas.
(3) Actively involved in clinical trial and medical research
 (4) Consultancy services on drugs to In-Patients.
(5) Counsel patients and healthcare Professionals on drugs.
(6) Compound and dispense medication as required.
 
Drug Information Service
(1) Provide, gather and disseminate information on drugs and drug therapy to healthcare professionals, students and requesters.
(2) Collate and report any adverse drug reaction (ADR) observed in patients to National Pharmacovigilance centre.
(3) Maintain Drug Information Centre and liaise with appropriate DICS in the Country.
(4) Prepare hospital pharmacy news letter or bulletin
(5) Maintaining computer and Internet utilities, literature files and other reference materials.
(6) Participate in hospital educational programs.

Pharmaceutical Store Management Services
(1) Ensure efficient drug budgeting and quantification
 (2) Manage drug procurement and inventory control.
(3) Ensure availability of all drugs at all-times.
(4) Receive, store and distribute all drugs.
(5) Ensure adequate records and bookkeeping on all drug transactions.

Production Unit
(1) Produce wide variety of items commonly used in the hospital e.g. Lotions, Syrups, Ointment and non-commercially available products.
(2) Perform analysis on products manufactured & purchased.
(3) Develop & revise assay procedures.
(4) Undertake programmes in product development.
(5) Assist research division in special formulations.
