Definition and Brief History of Physiotherapy (LUTH)
Physiotherapy is defined as the examination, evaluation, intervention and prevention of physical disability, movement dysfunction and pain resulting from injury, disease, disability, or other health related conditions.
Physiotherapy includes:
1) the performance and interpretation of tests and measurements to assess pathophysiological, pathomechanical, electrophysiological, ergonomic, and developmental deficits of bodily systems to determine diagnosis, intervention, prognosis, and prevention;
2) the planning administration, and modification of therapeutic interventions that focus on posture, locomotion, strength, endurance, cardiopulmonary function, balance, coordination, joint mobility, flexibility, pain, healing and repair, and functional abilities in daily living skills, including work; and
3) the provision of consultative, educational, research, and other advisory services.
In general, almost all conditions necessitating drug therapy or surgical intervention will require physiotherapy opinion and management at one stage or the other.
Memory Lane
The Department of Physiotherapy started as a unit under the department of Paediatrics in 1968. The Head of Department, Paediatrics at this time was the late Prof. Olukoye Ransome-Kuti. Among the first set of physiotherapists that worked in the physiotherapy unit then were Prof. G. I. Odia, Mrs Mabogunje and Mrs Oke. In 1972, physiotherapy unit became a department with Prof. Odia as the pioneer Head of Department.
From this period till today the department among its various functions serves as the clinical wing of the department of physiotherapy College of Medicine, University of Lagos, with the major responsibilities of training physiotherapists at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, conducting research, and rendering professional services both at local and international level.

1. Orthopaedic and Sport Physiotherapy unit 2. Neurological Physiotherapy unit
3. Cardiopulmonary/Medicine Physiotherapy unit 4. Paediatrics Physiotherapy unit
5. Physiotherapy in Surgical conditions unit
6. Physiotherapy in Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit.
Each unit is under the control of a Unit Head that report to the Consultant in the unit who is the Overall Head.
Services Rendered
1. Treatment of patients in all aspect of physiotherapeutic care as listed in all the departmental units.
2. Conducting clinical researches and published m peered reviewed journal both locally and internationally.
3. Rendering professional services, as guest speaker, external assessors/examiners etc.

Physiotherapy Postgraduate (MSc & PhD) students Physiotherapy Undergraduate students.
