Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Biology

The present department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Biology started as a unit of Oral Pathology in the department of Oral Surgery/Oral Pathology in 1968 and had its 1st pioneer Professor in June 1969, in the person of Prof. Roger Browne, a visiting Professor from University of Birmingham. The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Biology in its current form was created by the council of University of Lagos in 1981

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Biology is located in the Faculty of Dental Sciences in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. The location is at the Idi-Araba campus of the University.

The Department is responsible for Oral Biopsy services as its major clinical practice. The Department also trains the Resident Doctors that specialize in the practice of Oral Pathology.

The department provides training for Resident doctors in Oral Pathology and also contributes to the training of Dental Nurses.

The department also teaches Oral Biology courses (the Basic Sciences which prepares students for understanding of Clinical Dentistry) and Oral Pathology (the basis of understanding disease processes upon which clinical dentistry practice is based).

Departmental Staff also undertake Research Projects geared towards understanding the genesis of a number of diseases encountered in clinical practice with the objective of applying appropriate treatment, and ultimately preventing these diseases.
